Are cotton socks responsible for Morgellons Disease?
Or is this just an additional vector?
(morgellons.eu, 02.07.2006) -- It has already been speculated that the fibers resemble normal cotton fibers in some way and it has also been one of the main explanations that these fibers simply are cotton fibers. Is this a serious issue?
Cotton has for a long time been one of the more obvious explanations for the colored fibers in connection with the diagnosis "delusional parasitosis".
However normal cotton fibers do not glow under ultraviolet light and they do not move autonomously as well.
If these fibers were made of cellulose like normal cotton this should normally be very easy to find out as cellulose burns quite effectively. Currently no definitive analysis of the fibers has happened although this is the most obvious symptom.
Therefore some people suffering from Morgellons have tried to analyse these fibers which seems to show that the fibers cannot be burnt. These and more results - although normally not adhering to scientific standards as this is not possible for most of the people involved - should be enough to motivate the scientific community to investigate this matter.
Is cotton responsible?
We do not know yet.

According to Dr. William Harvey (chairman of the NASA Education Advisory Committee)
94% of people suffering from Morgellons have tested positive for the bacteria associated
with Lyme disease, or Borreliosis.
What is interesting however is the fact that most of the Morgellons cases occur in California, Texas and Florida although in these states specifically
there is a very low volume of Lyme Disease cases as can be seen here and here.
